Another lay off and a baby shower!

It was around this time last year that I was laid off a second time by the same company. Canopy Growth being the majority owner of Biosteel made the decision to sell it. They ended up laying off pretty much all Biosteel employees, probably to make it more of an enticing sale. My team and many others were called onto a Zoom meeting first thing in the morning and told we no longer had jobs.

I was stressed. I'm about seven months pregnant at this point, about to move into my new, more expensive apartment, and probably not very employable as who wants to hire someone who is going to be going on Maternity leave within their first month or two of employment? I tried anyway, but there is no hiding a pregnancy at this point! In the end I ended up going on Maternity leave a month before Laken was actually born. I had about four weeks of severce pay and then lived off savings for a bit but by mid-November, it was no longer an option to continute that way. I was upset about this because I wanted to spend my leave with my baby, not waiting for him to get here.

In October I moved into my new two bedroom apartment. I had help from my mom and cousin Andrea doing the last minute procrastination packing. I also hired a moving company because while I don't have much stuff, there is now way I could do any heavy lifting in my third trimester.

Halloween also happened! Rebel and I dressed up a skeletons. I was wiped out from having a heartburn and being in the ER the whole night! I'll talk about that a bit more in the next post.

After moving into the new apartment, time seems to speed up and slow down all at the same time! In November my mom, sister and cousin, Andrea, threw a baby shower for me. It was a really special day. Andrea and her daughters decorated my parents house, my mom made quiche and a charcuterie board. My sister set up a onesie making station and the onesies people decorated were very creative, adorable and funny! I was so greatful to everyone who had shown up to celebrate baby girl! The love and support I got from my friends and family solidified even more how wanted and loved this baby already was.

Next post will be about the crazy heart burn I got in my third trimester and then Laken's birth story will be after that!
